In Detail

Clear Aligners

Invisalign is a whole new way to straighten your teeth invisibly by using a series of clear removable aligners to straighten your teeth without any metal wires or brackets. As you replace each aligner with the next in a series, your teeth will move - little by little, week by week - until they have straightened to the final position your orthodontist has prescribed.

Invisalign is for adults and because Invisalign is nearly invisible, you can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing. Invisalign retainers are removable so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment as well as being able to brush and floss normally to maintain good oral hygiene. Invisalign is comfortable since it has no metal brackets or wires so you spend less time in the doctor's chair getting adjustments.

Partial Braces

In early treatment braces are sometimes placed on the permanent six-year molars and the four front teeth. This can be done on the upper teeth, the lower teeth or both the upper and lower teeth. These appliances are used to align the teeth to their correct positions in the jaws. This allows the future eruption of the remaining permanent teeth to occur much better. These appliances are commonly called "two by fours."

Elastics (Rubberbands)

Rubberbands come in many different sizes and can be worn in many different ways. They are usually worn from the top teeth to the bottom teeth to help align the teeth so the bite is correct.

Habit Appliances

An appliance used to help you stop a harmful habit such as thumb sucking, finger sucking or tongue thrusting.

Holding Arches

A holding arch does exactly as the name implies - it holds your teeth in place. Holding arches are usually made by fitting braces on 6 year old molars. An impression is then taken to properly fit a wire around the back of your teeth. This attaches to the braces on your molars. This appliance is place in your mouth to act as the holding arch. On the lower holding arch, the wire fits very closely to the back of your teeth. On the upper holding arch, the wire fits next to the roof of your mouth. A small circular piece of plastic completes the upper holding arch. Holding arches are usually not visible to others.

Headgear

An external device typically worn 8-12 hours/day which exerts a certain amount of pressure to help guide both the position of the teeth and growth of the jaws. Headgear requires an adjustment period and are most comfortable when worn consistently after the initial break-in period.

Palatal Expander

A) An appliance used to widen the upper jaw. It corrects narrow upper jaw structures and crossbites.

B) When used alone or with a protraction facemask, the upper expander/bonded hyrax covers many of the back teeth.

Distal Jet

This is an appliance cemented to the upper teeth that uses the roof of your mouth as an anchor to move your upper teeth back and create space. It is typically worn for 3-6 months and is often used as a substitute for a headgear as it does not require patient compliance. As with most appliances, you may experience sensitivity for 3-4 days and experience a period of adjustment in swallowing and speaking. Some patients may need over the counter medications if discomfort is present.

Forsus™

A Forsus appliance is a fixed appliance used when the upper teeth and jaws protrude. It has a similar function as a headgear, Herbst appliance or Class II rubberbands, but requires less patient compliance.

Retainers

An appliance used at the end of Phase I, Phase II and comprehensive treatment. There are several different kinds of retainers that can be worn. Retainers worn after early treatment are different than those worn after full braces. Retainers may be removable or cemented to the inside of the front teeth.

Bionator

This is a device that helps both jaws grow in proportion to one another. A Bionator usually keeps the lower jaw forward and helps teeth to properly erupt, leading to a natural and correct bite relationship.

Orthognathic Surgery

A surgical procedure performed by an oral surgeon. Orthognathic surgery is done to correct serious growth discrepancies between the upper and lower jaws in non-growing, skeletally mature patients. This type of surgery may be performed on one or both jaws, depending upon the particular skeletal discrepancy. Your Orthodontist in conjunction with an Oral Surgeon determines the appropriate treatment plan. Braces are worn both prior to and after orthognathic surgery.
